Hi friends, after the last installment of WOW THANKS YAY’s focus on broad, sweeping macro trends in the VO world and AI development (see here if you missed it and are curious), today I’m refocusing on the little things in life. Enjoy!
On one of our first nights in Turin, Ashlinn and I tried to go to an outdoor event that was unfortunately cancelled at the last moment due to a thunderstorm. We’d braved the weather to make it out only to find a mostly empty park and a few bartenders without customers. One of them was a friendly young man named Abel, who told us about his love of art and modestly described a few installations he was working on.
Well, it turns out he really was being quite humble– he’s an incredibly talented street artist whose work can not only be found all over Turin, but in collaborations with various brands. This weekend he invited us to a gallery exhibition of his work, which was a wonderful way to start getting more involved in the art scene here in Turin.
You can check out his stunning work here.
Continuing the thread of interesting people we’ve met since we’ve been here, I am so grateful this week for all of the people who have been making Turin feel like home. It’s not just a stereotype– community is paramount in Italy, and we’ve been fortunate enough to make new connections and reignite some old ones to begin creating our own patchwork quilt of a family here.
One friend of Ashlinn’s from her New York days who has been living in Turin for four years generously invited us to an event her friend Federico was putting on– the celebration dinner for an off-road race of Fiat Pandas in a small village near Asti. We didn’t know what to expect, but we had a wonderful time enjoying incredible food, live music, and chatting with new friends. We were the only group there who weren’t either locals of the small village itself or drivers in the race.
Such opportunities to participate in small town life, to peek behind the curtain and enjoy a festival that is completely unadvertised and not meant for outsiders, are rare and so valuable, and we’re beyond grateful to have been included.
A year ago today my very favorite human being in the world agreed to walk beside me every day and always. Although it’s here under the topic of celebration, today is certainly worthy of a gigantic wow and thanks as well. Each and every day that I get to spend with my dear Ashlinn is a deep well of wonder and gratitude for me. My life is infinitely richer and more delightful with her in it. She’s my constant companion, my creative inspiration, my partner in all manner of delicious mischief, my wisest source of counsel, and my dearest and truest friend. Here’s to many, many more trips around the Sun with you, my love!
