The last couple of days my thoughts have been with my friends and family in those areas of the USA getting slammed with snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. I’ve been especially concerned for my colleagues in Texas and North Carolina who are not only snowed in but also without power.
One family member commented, “So much for global warming!” Now, I understand how counterintuitive it may be, but this severe weather is just one example of climate change unfolding before our eyes- the destabilization of the healthy stratospheric patterning of airflow known as the polar vortex.
The AP posted a great article about this phenomenon just yesterday. And as for what we can do to help our atmosphere heal and rebalance so the severity of our weather doesn’t continue to worsen, you can read or listen a brilliant book I narrated last year with Tantor, The 100% Solution: A Plan for Solving Climate Change by Solomon Goldstein-Rose.
I love me some tech. Some nights, after Ashlinn goes to bed, I will stay up for an hour or three catching up on the world of Mac, recording gear, digital photography…or even upgrading vintage BMWs with Tesla motors (yes!).
But tech is not just fun. It can also help us get things done and make art. There are two recent, standout additions to my creative tech kit for which I’m very grateful:
First is the Huawei E5577Cs-321 MiFi hotspot. I had my first session using a Source Connect to ISDN session with a client in Ohio yesterday evening. I was stressing when the house wifi got spotty prior to showtime but this mighty little 4G hotspot that could was a lifesaver.
The second is the DJI Osmo Pocket. Like the Huawei, it is an unbelievably tiny yet professional-grade piece of kit. Butter-smooth gimbal stabilization, 4K video, face-tracking, selfie-mode and even timelapse video (as seen below), all for just under two hundred bucks. Phenomenal.
My last few dwellings all had closets or pantries that provided space to convert into a recording booth. Our apartment here in Rome is basically a 900 square foot studio with ten foot ceilings… great for living, not so much for professional recording. Last week, my beautiful new Demvox isolation booth arrived from Spain and I am absolutely floored by having a 100% purpose-built, quality space to ply my craft. Here’s a little video of Ashlinn and me assembling our new 580kg baby.
