Some ghosts came knocking on my door earlier today.
Whereas last week my focus was on the wins and lessons learned over the past decade, today it was my losses and missteps that were speaking more loudly.
Ultimately, I believe that our failures are really just feedback. They give us useful information to help us perform better the next time around.
But it can still sting deeply to sit with that information all the same.
Fortunately, I have some wonderfully wise people in my life who are willing to sit there with me in times like these. People who can love me, flaws and all, and help me find a way transform my lumps of coal into gold.
I found this excellent article by Tony Fahkry a while back that speaks to making peace with feelings of guilt and shame.
“Showing mercy towards oneself can be the greatest act of kindness and healing process to release the burden of the past. Showing mercy towards oneself liberates you from no longer carrying the guilt into the future…
“You were doing the best you could at the time given the resources apparent to you. As you journey through life and acquire a better understanding and awareness, typically you look back on the past with a feeling of regret and remorse for your actions.
“What if in looking back on your past you did so with a compassionate heart filled with forgiveness rather than guilt? Release the burden of carrying the guilt into the present moment for in doing so you not only heal the past, you simultaneously bring new life to the present and future.”
I hope that you too will find the strength to offer yourself mercy and to ask for help the next time your ghosts come around for a visit.
Make this week magnificent!
