I know that it’s so easy for us to get swept up in all of the going and doing associated with this season that we totally forget the true heart of it all is in the Being.
Being present with the people you love. Being compassionate and forgiving of those same dear ones’ inevitable idiosyncrasies and quirks. Being grateful for all of the gifts and grace you’ve been given. Being mindful of those who are struggling and hurting right now and being open to respond in service.
All of the stuff will fade in time, but Being with You is the gift they’ll remember most.
If you find yourself getting carried away, you can always just pause, take a breath, and come back home to Being in your body in this very moment. Life is always right here patiently waiting for you to simply be.
That being said, I realize there’s nary a moment to read or watch anything this week (beyond your treasured texts and holiday movies, of course) so I won’t be making any suggestions in those departments! However, as you’re seeking that last, elusive gift, or baking something delicious, or wrapping up your treasures, I do have a great soundtrack for you.
My dear sister and partner in a former life, Jessica Rau, has a wonderful tradition of recording and releasing a new Christmas carol each year. It seems like only yesterday that she put out the first one, so it’s hard to believe that she’s up to number fourteen! This year’s rendition of ‘The Bells of St. Mary’s’ produced in honor of her awesome fiancé, Feo, and their upcoming nuptials (YAY!) is yet another classic. You can stream or download it along with her entire collection of carols for free right here. Today happens to be her birthday, too, so I’d also like to extend a Very Happy Birthday to you, Jess!
I’ll leave you with the words from another song in her catalog that I would like to second on my own Grown Up Christmas List:
“What is this illusion called the innocence of youth
Maybe only in our blind belief can we ever find the truth
No more lives torn apart
That wars would never start
And time would heal all hearts
And everyone would have a friend
And right would always win
And love would never end, no
This is my grown up Christmas list
This is my only lifelong wish”
Make this week magnificent!
