It’s a sneaky and insidious affliction. Although it seductively tells you it will provide safety and greatness, in my experience, all it ever delivers is untapped creativity, unrealized dreams and missed human connections. What has perfectionism given you?
In this era of Instagrammed lives and selfie beauty filters, perfectionism seems to have become even more pervasive for many of us- and especially our youth. That’s why I was super stoked to see this spoken word piece from Prince Ea exposing the Prison of Perfection for what it is…A. Big. Fat. Lie.
“I hate the very word perfection.
It has driven me crazy for years guided by fear,
I was constantly comparing my self to my peers,
stressing and striving to reach some idea that only existed,
Oh, you thought perfection was real?
Well, I disagree.
I mean, have you ever seen a perfect tree?
In real life have you ever gone into a forest and seen a perfect tree?
Nah see they all got a little something going on,
some lean this way some lean that way,
some have a little too much moss
and some got a whole bunch of bark that’s been ripped off. . .
But somehow, they are all beautiful.
But when it comes to people we don’t seem to see that we,
are all beautiful, in all of our expression.”
READ: A very closely related affliction is the “Expectation Hangover.” You know, that sick feeling you get in your gut when someone lets you down, or even when you let yourself down.Cara Cutruzzula offers some insights on how to deal with these moments and turn them into learning opportunities, including asking yourself these questions:
“Were your expectations tied to someone else?
A standard that you set?
Were your goals really realistic (it’s OK if they weren’t—be honest)?
Do they relate to something that’s happened in the past?”
LISTEN: I was pretty stoked to have an email from Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy in my inbox on Friday morning announcing the release of his new solo record, Warm! I’ve been putting the record through its paces as I’ve been driving around and wrenching on my car the last couple of days, and I must say it does not disappoint. Classic Tweedy vibes.
Make this week magnificent!
